Fresno Hostels: Needle in a Haystack

Unlike in other countries, hostels are not common in the United States. They are definitely hard to find. There are only 10,000 hostels in the world, and only 350 of them can be found in the United States, according to Hostelling International-USA. Imagine finding one in 350 in the whole country.

There is no prominent hostel in Fresno. Even if there were, they are not registered. This is why you can spend your whole day in Fresno looking for one and you'll still end up checking in at a motel or a hotel. Even the Internet cannot be of much help in providing you with information on available hostels in Fresno or any other American city. But if you are really determined to find a hostel in Fresno, especially those that are keeping a low profile, here are some tips.

The best way to find a hostel is to visit the tourist office. They usually have a list of available motels, hotels, and hostels. If you find one, prepare to pay 20 to 30 bucks, the usual cost of hostel service in the country. This is definitely cheaper than a hotel. Like all other hostels, don't be surprised if you end up sharing a room with a stranger, because that's how hostels operate. If you're into meeting people and making new friends, you will find it delightful. If you're on a romantic travel or a family getaway, it might not be exactly the best thing for you. However, some hostels offer private rooms, but only a few have a bathroom in them. You will have to share the bathroom and the kitchen with all the other occupants of the hostel. Almost all hostels in the US separate their accommodations for females from those for males. In some hostels, they divide them according to floors: one floor is exclusive for women and another for men.

Hostels are not very popular in America because of the burgeoning motel industry. A traveler who is tight on budget and is hesitant to check in at a hotel is more likely to choose a motel than a hostel. Motels can be just as inexpensive and they are more private than hostels.
