Fresno Tourism: Rising Above Raisins

Fresno is the raisin capital of the world. Located at the center of the San Joaquin Valley, grapes are grown in enormous amounts, most of which are dried into the world-famous California raisins. But the city of Fresno is more than just raisins. The city has enjoyed increasing tourism activities throughout the years. Mind you, it's not just because of the raisins. There are several interesting attractions in Fresno that tourists are always dying to see.

The Fresno Art Museum: Art is very much appreciated in the city of Fresno. If you need proof, go visit the Fresno Art Museum. Founded in 1948, this museum has become one of the leaders in promoting contemporary and modern art. Today it is home to numerous works from local, national and international artists. You'll be struck with awe by some Pre-Columbian and Mexican art.

Downing Planetarium: If you're not the type who gets painting-happy or raisin-happy, then the Downing Planetarium might spark some interest in you. Built in 1999, this great attraction has become one of the most visited places in Fresno. A 30-foot dome covers a star theater with a seating capacity of 70. It is also equipped with star, video and slide projectors which are used to put on various shows for its visitors, such as Hubble Vision. This show features several astronomical discoveries made by the Hubble Space Telescope. You will surely enjoy seeing different planets, black holes and star formations. Another more recent show is Destination Pluto. This show will take you on a journey from the sun to Pluto. Along the way, be prepared to get blown away by amazing facts about the solar system.

Chaffee Zoological Gardens: If virtual space travel is too geeky for your taste, why not try the Chaffee Zoological Gardens? Residents of Fresno are fortunate to live very close to this incredible attraction. Founded in 1908, it started out as a very small zoo housing a few species of birds and bears. The zoo then began to accept animal donations and sheltered unwanted creatures. Since then, it has transformed from a plain zoo to a first-rate, internationally known tourist attraction. The zoo also puts on a number of educational and entertaining shows and exhibits for their visitors.

Although the city is known worldwide as the raisin capital of the world, Fresno's wonders are not just limited to vineyards and farms. The city continues to attract tourists from all over the world because it offers many other attractions that are wonderful to see.
