Fresno has only a few universities, and the most popular is the California State University at Fresno, more commonly called Fresno State. It is part of the 23-campus system of the California State University. The campus lies on 320 acres of land next to the vast University Farm at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the San Joaquin Valley.
Fresno State is the largest tertiary institution in the city. It is a four-year licensed university that offers undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate degrees in as many as 100 fields. The university houses over 20,000 students. It university runs on a semester schedule, with the fall semester starting in late August and ending in December. The spring semester starts in mid-January and ends in mid-May. This year, they officially began having a summer semester that runs from late May to early August.
Aside from Fresno State, Fresno Pacific University also provides quality education to the inhabitants of the city. A private Christian university, it was formerly called Pacific Bible Institute. Founded in 1944, the university is arranged into four different schools: Religion, Humanities, and Social Sciences; Natural Sciences; Business; and Education. It offers bachelor’s degrees in 26 areas of study, and minors in 10 fields.
Besides the California State University Fresno and Fresno Pacific University, you will also find a number of other colleges and universities in the city. These include several institutions that offer four-year courses. Among these are the University of California, San Francisco, which offers the Fresno Medical Education Program, as well as the San Joaquin College of Law.
Although there are only a few universities in Fresno, it doesn't mean that the place is not conducive to learning. The Fresno County Public library has a main building and more than 30 branches all over the city. The library is linked to the library system of the San Joaquin Valley. It is rich with over one million volumes. It also offers around 2000 periodical subscriptions, more than 45,000 video resources, almost 100,000 audio materials, and countless government publications as well.
